Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Merging P3e Databases (R5.1)

7 replies [Last post]
I am using two databases to service different divisions within the same organisation and plan to merge both databases into a single instance. This involves moving 70+ users, 170 portfolios and over 3600 projects from one database into the other. The structures, OBS EPS, Resources etc are similar but there are thousands of project and activity codes, a few are common.
The only method that I am aware of to implement this is to rebuild the host database, users, access privileges etc then export/import by portfolio.
This means rebuilding filters, layouts, reports etc, a horendouse task.

Anyone tried to merge databases?

Hi David,

I Think it is possible, send me a private message, and we could organise a video conference. I have people, besides myself who can assist you, if not so be it, a small amount of time lost, otherwise me might be able to resolve your problems in a very pragmatical way.
I note your comments, however, I totaly disagree with your timescales. I am dealing with 3600 projects spread throughout central engineering headquarters, 8 nuclear power stations, also converting from R4.1 to R5.1 then importing into an infrastructure that is not yet fully tested. Also need to consider continuous work for the planners, thus the reason for dealing with exporting/importing by portfolio.

Hi David,
I think you are over reacting, you have to sit quietly and think the process through, work out all the pitfalls, which will take about a week and then get stuck in. The exercise will probably take less than a week. Work out the simplest ways, have been through this problem already.

Philip

The effort and time it will take really depends on the state of your databases and your ability touse tha Integration API to export and import data using the business rules.

Yuo really need to have a good look at the databases to see what is different and what "merge" really means.

Hi David,

Make sure you convert all your structures to global before you try and converge, and check you haveno conflicting codes, should be a painless process

David

A company I worked for - and I had better not say who - tried it and ended up having to start again from the original data restored from backup.

That was 30 odd users, 9 nodes, 250 portfolios and probably about 1000 project.

My only comment good luck and have you made a backup?!

Hope someone else can give guidance - sounds like a job and a half.

Cheers
