01.5.1 INTRODUCTION

In this Module, what we are doing is not monitoring and controlling the work of others against their plan, but monitoring and controlling our own work against our plan. Because project controls also has a budget in terms of time and money and because we too are likely to have some constraint on the available resources, project controls need to have a plan and then monitor and control what we are doing against our plan.

Thus we would be applying the same earned value formulas to those work packages and activities we are responsible to produce, to ensure that like the project manager, subcontractors and vendors, we too are able to track and report OUR progress against our own internal execution plan.

This is not only important to establish our credibility as professionals, but will also help support or refute claims and disputes.

Referencing again to the Russian Nesting Dolls (Module 1-2 Developing The Project Controls Plan) which are designed to fit inside one another, controlling, analysing and reporting progress against the project controls plan is a scaled down version of the full project control process and uses exactly the same tools and techniques but only represents the application of those tools and techniques to those specific work packages, activities and other responsibilities of project controls to the project team and other key stakeholders.
