Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Hello Planners,

my customer is facing a strange behavior in P6 V2.0:

she's trying to change the duration of some "Task dependant" activities, no resource loaded; she enters a new figure in the Original Duration field of the Activity Detail, Status tab, and the Finish Date does not change, should she re-schedule the project or not.

one more point: the project is not baselined (and the primary baseline bar shows the current project), but the primary baseline bar is displayed; when the customer enters a new duration for a task, the "baseline" bar becomes longer although the "current project" bar does not change.

Any idea? Thanks you all,

Alexandre

Check on the following setting, it might be the cause of the weird behavior. Alexandre, remember I do not use P6 and as well as MS Project I import the files into my software.

re-distribute

"You moved from Guatemala to Guatapeor" in English; "you moved from Guatemala to Guataworst"; in CPM jargon "you moved from from MS Project to P6".

Not all the issues with P6 are due to their infamous bugs but at times because of poor design, too many redundant fields and settings that will drive you crazy. Obviously if you do not figure out their obscure settings it is not because of them but because of you.

Best regards,

Rafael

P.S. It is always good to hear from you.

I learned the planned date concept the hard way in primavera p6;

For some reason, I got xer file from my college and we don’t have the same original duration for some activities, I check every possible p6 calculation, calendar, options, without success. two days later, and  After some hard googling

I founded this excellent paper

http://www.ronwinterconsulting.com/Understanding_P6_Dates.pdf.

Now, I just make a global change, planned start = start, planned finish = finish.

Alexandre,

You are not using P6 V2.0; that software was issued in 2001.  You may be using P6, Version 6, Service Pack 2 (sometimes called Version 6.2).

Unlike MS Project, P6 does not default to automatic CPM calculation whenever any parameter changes (you can set it to do this but this is not the default setting.)  Once you updates are complete, then you should recalculate the CPM (F9 Key or menu items, Tools / Schedule).  You really should consider taking some classes on CPM and on using P6 – there is a lot to learn.   Good luck!

If P6 works similar to SureTrak with regard to original, remaining duration and percent complete then only if selected activity is not in progress nor 100% complete a change in original duration will trigger a change in remaining duration. In order to see date changes the schedule should be re-scheduled.

About baselining in P6 I have heard that when baseline is not specified you will see planned dates of current job.

happened to me as well. Check the relationship and restrictions on the activities, check the calendar.
