Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Scheduling factory facility as resources

Hello all,

I work in a precast production factory as a project planner. Using P6 for scheduling the production work in the factory. We have a limited number of beds, beam lines and moulds to cast the elements. I have to schedule multiple projects simultaneously to use the moulds efficiently. Now my query:

I want to assign the moulds to a certain precast element in one project. Once that is done and demoulded I would like this mould to be assigned to some other element in some other project. Basically, I want to assign the moulds as resources and schedule the work based on the availability of mould (resource levelling) without giving any realtionships. But, I have read elsewhere that assigning same resource to multiple projects is not a good idea. If that's the case what other methodology can I use? I just don't want to use activity relationships, as the sequence of casting is always subject to change.

Looking forward to some expert tips and advice.

Regards

Mohamed

That's an out of the box thinking. Great! Will implement it and see how it goes. Thankyou for the advise Mike. I am just a little hesistant conisdering how complex the project file will become to have all projects in a single file. Let me see how it goes.

And thank you for your suggestions as well Vladimir

Hi Mohamad.

Why have different project files for the casting process.

Use different sub charts for each project under one master casting file. Then the limited number of forms can be levelled efficiently using the priority feature.

Best regards

I don't see any problem in assigning the same resource to activities of different projects.

Resource leveling shall be done for the project portfolio, that's all.

But if the resource shall be used on several activities of one project before moving to activities of another project P6 levelling may create problems.
