Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Dear Experts

I have a question on Primavera P6.

As far as i know, duration is not an appropriate unit to determine the plan or actual percentage of a project  at a particular time given. The more accurate is manhours.

Now, the schedule % complete in p6 is calculated by duration. Which means the Schedule % complete given by the software is not accurate , which implies it is not correct.

Please give me some  guidance on this.   Thank u Sir

Hi Rodel Marasigan

Thank u for ur detail explanation. So much appreciated.

so, Schedule%complete for activity is time-based (duration based)

Schedule % complete for WBS is cost based

I still cannot brain why P6 use duration based to calculate the plan% for activities. of which it is well known and agreed by all the planning engineers & schedulers that using duration is the least accurate for us to get the %.

Anyway thank u so much Mr Marasigan

Hi Suhaila,

The activity schedule % complete specifies how much of the activity's baseline duration has been completed so far. Computed based on where the current data date falls between the activity's baseline start and finish dates. If the data date is earlier than the baseline Start, the Schedule % Complete is 0. If the data date is later than the baseline Finish, the Schedule % Complete is 100. The Schedule % Complete indicates how much of the activity duration should be currently completed, relative to the selected baseline.

P6 calculate schedule % complete on an activity based on cost distribution in linear for each activity duration but for WBS or summary it follows the cost distribution total for all activities using the resource curve or future buckets.

See sample below:
Task 1 - 10 day duration
Calendar Mon-Fri 8hrs per day (8:00-4:00)

Schedule-Complete

The sample Task 1 had a resource assigned having backloaded resource curved. I moved the data date to Friday 5:00PM, 11Mar2022 without scheduling (F9) to show the Schedule % complete based on baseline duration of activity which is equivalent to 50% (5days/ 10 days) but the summary or WBS heading is showing the backloaded Schedule % complete @ 35% on the 5th day.

Note: Schedule % complete on summary will not show if you don't have cost assigned to resources.

Schedule % complete is from the baseline. It is cost based. You could (in error) have the current project set to the baseline. I only use two percent completes in any layout: oN eof either Performace % complete (BCWP) or Perforamce % complete Labour ( BQWP) and Schedule % complete (BCWS)
