Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Hello

Can anyone confirm 1. if this is possible and 2. any negative effects?

SQL server. All clients are currently running 6.2.

We have to rebuild a laptop and I'm wondering if I can install version 6.7 on it and use it along side the other laptops running 6.2

Wanted to check as I am not sure if the 6.2 machine would be able to open a project created on the 6.7 machine?

Thanks in advance

David,

When you say, “use it (the P6.7) along side of the other laptops running 6.2” I assume that you are referring to all laptops running stand-alone versions of P6 and not a networked group all connected into the same, common server.  If this is what you mean, then you should have no troubles exchanging XER files.  There might possibly be problems reading a P6v7-created XER file in the P6v6 environments, but I do not believe that there will be difficulties with a P6v6.2 reading a P6v6.7-created XER file.

If there are any difficulties, the problem is simply with the first line of the XER file.  There is a well-know trick of opening-up a later-version XER file using a simple word processor such as Notebook (or even with Excel) and changing the part of the first line where it says, “ERMHDR           7.0       2010-09-10 ….” And change the “7.0” to “6.2” and saving it again.  Then the earlier version can read the later version’s XER file.  Good luck!

Hi David

We did exactly the same and found out that 6.2 does not appear to be compatible with server 7.0. Obviously then had to update all our client machines to 7.0. Since then though no problems. Now running 7.1 with 7.2 downloaded and ready for update (when we get round to it)

Hi David,

It won't happen, I've confronted this problem before.

Perhaps others can give some advice and proposal.
