Folks,

I have serious problem with Remaining Resource calculation after first update of activity
Senario
Activity A - Typ Unit Price % unit() duration 5 day budgeted unit 100
first progress 20% shows remaining as 80 (Correct)
second Progress 40% shows remaining out of wack!!
Problem ( Resource forecast based on the Progress is Wrong)

one solution put progress as physical and update the actual , works for single resource but for multi resource activity spread actual among resources equally ( as an example ) 20= actual (2 res divide 10 for each regardless of their Ratio)

Please advice

Hamed,

As I explained, you want to use physical % complete type and you want an automatic update on your actual unit, I suggest to combine it with Fixed Duration & Unit or Fixed Duration & Unit/Time. Update only Physical % complete and remaining duration. That should fix your problem.

Rodel,

I was Trying to have my remaining Unit calculation without Manually updating Actuals, as it does not let me to do that i need to manually update my actual unit after updating the Progress,

Thanks Again for your Help,

Hamed,

I was using P3 and P5 for a long time and have a deep knowledge on in & out and structures of P3 and P5. I wrote a lot of program and interfacing to P3 and P5 database and I don’t see any problem with it. I know how it works and the logic behind it.

Your comment “i Almost dont have any problem with Duration type And % Complete”

I suggest that you should look more on the synchronization of “duration type” and “% complete type”.

% complete type
* Physical: Physical % = Activity % Complete
Meaning: Unit = manually entered, duration = manually entered

* Unit: Unit % = Activity % Complete = Unit % complete
Meaning: Unit = automatic, duration = manually entered

* Duration: Duration % = Activity % complete = duration % complete
Meaning: Unit = manually entered, duration = automatic

Duration type: when combined with Physical %
* Fixed Unit and Fixed Unit/Time: Unit = manually entered and resource ratio are ignored (fixed)
If Unit change = duration is change calculated by max progress on each resources
Ex: Res A = 100, Res B = 60, duration = 24 days
Unit = 160, progress = 20% = 32 Actual units = 16 units per resources (fixed not ratio)
P5 by default calculate RD on max progress and not average. If have 2 resources as per example: Res A = 100-(16/100) is greater than Res B = 100-(16/60) therefore RD = 100-(16/100) = 20.16 day
RD then can manually adjust based on your judgement
The only difference between the two is when you’re adding new resources or change budget Fixed Units is fixed and Units remain unchanged even the duration change and Fixed Unit/Time change Units base on Unit/Time set.

* Fixed Duration & Units and Fixed Duration & Unit/Time: Units = manually entered and resource ratio are ignored (fixed) but Unit/Time is change and duration is fixed. The best way of entering progress on this method is update remaining duration (RD) and the Actual unit will change in ratio based on Duration % * Budget Unit. At completion Units = Remaining Units + Actual Units
Formula: Actual Unit = Duration % * BU = 100-(RD/OD)* BU
When adding or changing duration on Fixed Units, the budget units are remained unchanged and the Unit/Time will change. On Fixed Unit/Time when the duration is change then the budget unit will change based on the Unit/Time * duration.

Note: If Resources has a setting for default unit/time then the remaining duration will be calculated based on default settings.

Based on my detail explanation about the synchronization and usage of “duration type” and “% complete type”, you should be able to understand the logic behind it. As stated on my previous post which explained which area or field is affected when you change duration or units and the link between the duration type to physical, duration and unit % complete type.

Another Example: Unit % type when combine with fixed units or fixed unit/time
Unit % type = Activity percent complete = Unit % complete.
When Progress is entered to Status Tab: Unit % = 20%
Actual Units = automatic, Ratio are ignored (fixed) same logic with physical.
The only difference is Unit updated automatically and follow the synchronization logic.
Remaining duration are calculated the same.

Unit % type combines with fixed duration & unit or fixed duration & unit/time
Unit % type = Activity percent complete = Unit % complete.
When Progress is entered to Status Tab: Unit % = 20%
Actual Units = automatic, Ratio are ignored (fixed) same logic with physical.
Remaining duration is fixed and needs manually entered.

Example for Duration % type when combine with fixed unit or fixed unit/time
Duration % type = Activity percent complete = duration % complete.
When Progress is entered to Status Tab: Duration % = 20%
Remaining Duration= automatic, Actual Units = manual entry (ratio are ignored) and follow same synchronization.

Duration % type when combine with fixed duration & unit or fixed duration & unit/time
Duration % type = Activity percent complete = duration % complete.
Remaining Duration= automatic, Actual Units = automatic.
RD = OD – (OD * % Duration Complete)*100
It follows same synchronization logic and ratios are not ignored.

If you understand all my examples and their synchronization logic that should answer you query. I suggest that you should do a manual test on each area with different combination of duration type and % complete to understand the logic behind its area.

Note: For every change that you make for each combination press F5 to save your work first before proceeding to your exercise. Sometimes when entry was done the changes will not affect immediately and F5 function will save you automatically. Also make sure that default unit/time is set to 0/d otherwise the calculation will be based on your default settings.

Good Luck!!!

Hi Rodel,

Thanks For your Brief Explanantion about Activity Duration type and percent Complete, it should be really helpfull for anyone who does not have access to Enterprise
Manual, believe me i had done my research!! before posting a query,

I suggest you run the scenario and see it by yourself ,

A - Add an activity -
B- Duration type- fixed Unit
C- Res A= 100 Hr Res B= 60Hr
D- % Complete= physical( I dont want it to be linked with duration)

Put Duration as whatever you want lets say 4 days

Progress the activity for 20% ,first time it will give you eanred as 32 mhr and remaining as (160-32=128)
change your remaining duration if you wish so Press F9 and then update progress to 40% your earne is increased to 64 (Corrected from 72)but your remaining is not correct any more .
It shoud be (96)(corrected from 88) but it is not , the rest of my explanantion was about two way that i tried to solve it the first on was with matching Actual and earned means Considering CPI of 1 really does not affect my CPI calculation later as i bring actual in as a cost and etc, which has the prblem of even distribution, second one was updating remaining duration which i explained it as well

i choose above setting base on the same logic which Primavera has
remaining unit= (remaining units/Time)* (remaining Duration)

The problem is you can Dissolve relationship between % Complete and Remaining Duration , but it will not make the changes on Remaining duration calculation,

If you have used p3 you may come across functin called link remaining duration with % Complete, choosing physical % complete is a replacement for the feature, but it will not chnage remaining unit calculation,

P.S` - i Almost dont have any problem with Duration type And % Complete, also i have the Manual and as i mentioned i called Primavera Support and they are working on it too-
but none of the above stop me for appreciating your effort on responding back with such a detail.

Cheers,

Hamed

Hi Hamed planner,

This query has been answered in other thread on this forum. All you need is to search.

Here are some suggestions to help you out on your query.

First, you have to understand the usage of “% complete type” and “duration type”.

% complete type:
a) Physical Percent Complete when activity progress can most easily be reported based on personal judgment. Enter the activity percent complete.

b) Duration when activity progress can be easily reported in terms of actual calendar days of work remaining.
Duration % Cmp = [(Original Duration – Rem Duration) / Original Duration] x 100

c) Units when progress is best reported based on the work effort that has been accomplished and how much effort remains. Enter the actual and remaining units.
Units % Cmp = [Actual Units / At Completion Units] x 100

The Duration Type setting for an activity allows you to control how the module synchronizes these variables when any one of the equation’s variables are changed. The following table lists the value that is automatically changed to synchronize these variables whenever the value of one of the duration type variables is changed.

Activity duration type:
Activity duration type     Fixed Units/Time
When you change units, this value changes...     Duration
When you change the duration, this value changes...     Units
When you change units/time, this value changes...     Duration
When you add the first resource, this value changes...     Units
When you add additional resources, this value changes...     Duration

Activity duration type     Fixed Duration & Units/Time
When you change units, this value changes...     Units/Time
When you change the duration, this value changes...     Units
When you change units/time, this value changes...     Units
When you add the first resource, this value changes...     Units
When you add additional resources, this value changes...     Units

Activity duration type     Fixed Units
When you change units, this value changes...     Duration
When you change the duration, this value changes...     Units/Time
When you change units/time, this value changes...     Duration
When you add the first resource, this value changes...     Units
When you add additional resources, this value changes...     Duration

Activity duration type     Fixed Duration & Units
When you change units, this value changes...     Units/Time
When you change the duration, this value changes...     Units/Time
When you change units/time, this value changes...     Units
When you add the first resource, this value changes...     Units
When you add additional resources, this value changes...     Units/Time of each resource

On my detail explanation above, I think you are looking for a duration type set to duration and activity duration type set to Fixed Duration & Unit/Time or Fixed Duration & Unit.
If you follow this setting that should change your remaining duration, units against the ratio of your resources after updating duration % on status tab.

Hi Every One,
Thanks for Lots of reading unfortunatley i have not got any reply, i am following it with primavera System as well they are working on it too,

I take a chance to explain Problem another time,

Assum situation of Physical % Complete budgeted manhour 100
When you update an activity for 20% Progress
Earned is 20,Remaining is 80 which remaining unit will be spread during remaining duration - which will give you resource forecast- Enterprise does not work that way!!!after first update ,i have come cross couple of soloution as i explained in previous Post with Matching your actual and earned, which has a problem of spreading actual even among all resources regardless of their ratio to total budget,
in order to solve it now i am updating Remaining Budget after each progress (Total - Earned) and enter the new value - it works but i have a feeling it should be another way,

Thanks, and waiting for your comments,

Hamed
