Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

I have just inherited a schedule, from anther company, which I am busy setting a new baseline. I have entered a new activity with a duration of 42 weeks, however when I look at the summary total, under the original duration, it shows me 4 weeks, even though the activity dates and the summary dates, show the same. I have checked the project calendars and the activity calendar, and these appear normal,

Nathaniel,
You need to check further settings. (i.e. Unit Format, Time Format and Hours per time period)
Select Edit-> Users Preferences-> Time Unit tab
Under Unit Format-> is it hours or day?
Under Time Format-> is it hours or day or week?
Under Hours per time period-> it should match Default Calendar
Next settings-> What is your Default calendar setting? (i.e. 8hr/d, 10hr/d, 16hr/d or 24hr/d) If using only one calendar Default calendar should match activity calendar and hours per time period.
Summary band calculate durations using Default Calendar and hours per time period.
