YA Anoon ur right if we summarize activities we will not get the correct total float.

if you see my previous reply i have mentioned that i will try to get settled important activites for whci flot report should be submitted like particular milestones or activities which eends particular phase or service etc.

what exactly should be considered yet not decided, if anyone have any suggestions please reply.

but for sure it will not be a report showing float of summary of activities.

Dev

that’s easy Ravi, you can always make filter for the specific floats you like! I just hope you’re reviewing harder for your exams now!

Anoon,

You are absolutely right, This is possible.

But the thing is, even if no. of activties in the project are 18000, how many activties wil be having float more than 10?(Considering that total float report is submitted for activties having TF more than 10)

Should not be more than 1000 activties (I guess ??????)

Dev, how many pages report will be? Can we have any idea!!

Dev,

Just a reminder, though i’m not sure how it happened:

for example: The total project summary will show you zero (0) for both Free Float and Total Float. While underneath (major activities or rolled-up activities), will show figures, i.e. zero (0) for Free Floats and positive values for Total Floats.

Wait! there is an objection from Charlie, which I believe valid, in P3 calculations, what is the effect of Free Float with regards to Total Float? Please note, we are talking about summarized activities (or rolled-up activities).

And should this subject move forward, can the Total Float Report be made as valid basis for evaluating and/or granting extension of time (EOT)?

I think P3 users deserve the right to hear from authorized primavera representatives.

i’m out of this now....

Thank you all for your input.

i think annons suggestion is quite effective, i can finalise with cliend about the level of details required and then send them a reprt with important activities total float.

thanks again to everyone.

Dev

Before finalizing your report i suggest to clear your p3 of any errors, you can run PFXW.EXE file then recheck it by Claim Digger

Hi Guys,

Before we move forward, please clarify this or if ever anyone did encounter this statement:

Free Float FF = 0

Total Float TF = + or - any number.

Is this correct.

if Free Float is equal to zero, is there a possibility for Total Float to be + XXX

(nevermind the minus, it is a computer glitch).

Anybody says correct, please send your cv stating what school you graduated or your planning mentor.

Cheers,

Joseph

Ok, granting that Free Float doesn’t have any effect on Total Float with regards to summarized activities, then I suppose I can confirm my suggestion to "Dev" that he can only take the Total Float of summarized activities (or major milestones) to be included in the report. This will minimise his work checking each & every tasks.

Another question: Can this "Total Float Report" be made as basis for granting extension of time (EOT)? Supposing you got negative values in the report?

Anoon,

Im sure you know the meaning of FF and TF thier function will differ from each other. either FF is zero and TF -+ it dosn’t matter.

mind to add a few??...

supposing you got the Baseline Schedule presented, having positive Total Float (i mean all activities including constrained ones); naturally, Baseline Schedules supposed to have positive floats isn’t it?

once update is made, tasks will become dynamic, now, my question is: using summarized activities (group of activities, or major milestones.. whatever); What’s the effect of Free Float with regards to Total Float? Supposing your Current Schedule is showing zero (0) Free Float, while your Total Float is showing either positive or negative values (i mean for the same group of activities, where applicable)?

i got a machine gun of questions ’round here, but i’m afraid that would be too long..i just hope you don’t mind...

forget the name & place...

another suggestion (if you don’t mind taking it):

first thing first: Report the Floats (Total Float) from the Baseline / Target Schedule.

wait for the approval of your baseline/target schedule; once approved, then you had officially opened the total float to the project team, which means that there is no doubt that the Total Float is now owned by the Project (ownership of float).

time for updating your project: ...wait a minute i think my boss is looking for me...shsss...

Hi Anoon,

That is a very good question and it happens to all the projects when we cross 50% mark.

At that time we are showing All activities with with Floats < 1.

Ashraf

Dev, (i suppose this is not a real name, like mine)

i suggest you take only the total float of the major milestones (group of activities).

i just want to add another question: what if most of the total floats becomes negative? what are you going to report?

Hi Karim,

I undestand your point and agree with Ronald.

What I gave was a sujjestion to Dev as he wanted to reduce the size of his report.

Hi Ashraf,

Kindly refer to Ronald comment, I think he is correct.
There is no formal definition for this expression, thus that can be in many formats.
btw if the report will show all the activities and their TF, then this can be used by the employer/engineer/contractor in determining the "ownership" of the float (refer to who owns the float posts).

Karim

Since that the employer/engineer didn’t clarify what exactly he needs (whether TF to be >, = or < 0) then I think you can prepare a layout on Primavera showing activity desc. & TF. It doesn’t matter whether this will list 13000 or 14000 activities, after all U are supposed to send him the updated schedule every week/month and he is supposed to review the same.

Hi Dev,

What you can do is take the Consultant/Client Planning Engineer in confidence and decide on the activities having less than a particular value of Float. This report will be similar to near critical activity report.

My sujjestion is you can go for Float<7 i.e. activites having less than a week float, this will reduce the number of activity considerable and keep you focussed also.

Regarding the content you can use Bernards sujjestions.

Hope this helps.

Dear Karim,

Theoratically you are right but as Planners are people with brains and whole of project team looks towards them for a proper guidance hence anything we do needs to have some value.

It will be beeter to create something which will really help the project than sending a 1000 page Float report which no one will ever look and we will cut so many trees in wasting papers.

It is always better and also appreciated by the consultant/client when the Contractor comes up with good sujjestions and as in engineering so in project control it will be value engineering if Dev proposes a reduced, informative and focussed FLOAT report.

Ashraf

Hi dev,

my suggestion would be filter out all the activities with total float greater than 0.

Export it to excel and then copy & paste it into total float report. And as Ronald has suggested, add the required columns.

If importing and exporting is taking time or you have to do every month, then use PERVASIVE ODBC DRIVERS for data transfers.

John Harris has a good article on his website on use of Pervasive ODBC Drivers (Refer, if u r not aware of - Search google to get freeware version of Pervasive ODBC Drivers or download it from primavera ftp site).

Seems to be simple.

Try this and revert back.

Thanks Ronald.
It is requirement as per the particular specification that monthly report should contain a total float report.
now if i go as per the ronalds recommendation, my programme contains almost 18000 activities so i have to list out all the activities containing float (list may be 13-14000 activities)every month?
Ashraf, can you suggest something.

A "Total Float Report" is any report listing all of the activities; their Activity ID, Descrition and Total Float. You can also throw-in all of the other stuff like durations, percent complete and early/late dates if you like. There is no formal definition of the contents or format. Good luck!

Hi Dev,

Some people think GOOGLE is like anibiotics...it is a cure for everything.

Anyway if you can tell us what you are looking for instead of what Total Float report should contain we may better be able to help.
