Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

You are correct about the actual start and actual finish

because the rule is you cannot have a activity without actually started with actual $ or Q attachted to the activity and the same you cannot add actual quantity to the actvity while you reported the activity is already completed. BTW the period performance will give u a report on which activity you need to add an actual start date. Once you added the date you can just save it again and it will not affect your period display in the graph.

However with the data date you can have the actual finish same as the data date but not after same apply to actual start. "not necessary within the data date"

Dear Luca,

The close out problem will occur during any one of the following situations:

1. Resource/cost data may be updated properly but forgot to update Actual Start or Finish of the activity.

2. If Activity Actual Start or Completion Date falls exactly on the data date

Hence we have to make sure all the completion dates are well within the data date before storing period of performance.

It was pretty long time ago.
I do not remember well the error message.
It was look like P3 was not able to close out the period.
We had the same problem on two simple schedules, without sub-projects.
There were no problems of different dates, all the actual data were recorded properly, no one ahead the data data.
We perform also some checks on the activities, no one activity that was not started had RD different from OD. All the resource assignment and quantity were looking consistent.
From that time we decided to perform the analysis in excel exporting earned value from P3.
I know I was not detailed, but I can not remember well the message.
If some one had the same problem/s and solved it, I would appreciate his advice.

Maria,
pay attention with store period performance.
All the time I used, on big project, I had problems.

After few updateds, it look like not working any more and I lost the schedule.

I prefer to prepare the actual against the planned charts in excel or access.

You can select the two options
1 - Display All activities
2 - Selected activity

with option 2 you can then use the ctrl / shift keys to select different combination of activity.

Just a warning, two condition when display Earn Value in P3 S-Curve you need to be careful.

1. A activity is not able to earn any Value if the actual quantity or cost is 0
2. When Saving the period performance if QTP or CTP is 0 it will not save the 0 Value.

You have to be careful of the above especially if you use the S-Curve for reporting, because it may changes the history in term of EV and PV & ACT.

If you are interested in further details how can you overcome the problem. You can drop me a line

Cheers

thank you very much.
I now got a curve when I looked at the total of the project. When I tried to see the sub-projects I did not get any curves. I have to reconsider how we use recources in P3.

You can run the s-curve on the display (click resoucre/cost icon) and customize the s-curve as You want.
Then print and in "Page Setup" flag on "Resource/Cost Display".
So You will be able to print the schedule and below the s-curve You want.
I hope You were looking for this.
