Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Entering durations

Do you enter durations, or enter resources and work and come up with durations? Which one do you prefer and why? Is there an official correct way or just matter of preference?

typically you have to know HOW MUCH before you can say HOW LONG? 

so that mean that if you know the quantity of what you are installing, the rate of installation then you cna determine how long it wil take to do something.

If I ask you to install lights in a room you just cant say I can do it in 2 days. First you have to find out how many lighst there are and the types of lights. Then you can say typically that type of light 1 man can install 12 light fixtures in 1 day. If the quantity is 24 light fixtures one man the duration will be 2 days or I can say I will use 2 men and the duration will be 1 day.

So it is quantity/typical rate of installation per day,/how many men to use = duration

24 lights /12 lights per day (1 man) =2 days /or use 2 men =1 day

For us it is a matter of creating better models, models that can respond in a dynamic way to resource assignments.  We do not limit ourselves to archaic models and standards of the 1960’s.

  • We enter durations for activities hose duration is fixed and not dependent on the amount of resources. 
  • For activities whose duration is a function of resource assignment we use production type activities.

We model resource availability, resource demand, resource quantity, resource productivity and volume of work. For production type activities duration and effort are calculated based on required volume of work, assigned resources and their productivity.

Because resource assignments might vary depending on changing availability we use dynamic models. Attempting to resource level such dynamic scenarios using manual methods makes no sense.

Effort, Resource Quantity and Volume of Work

  • For some activities it makes sense to define activity duration as a function of volume of work, resource quantity, workload and production rates. This we call Productivity Type activities.
  • In the following example please note how availability increases as per hiring plan.  Also note about partial workloads and how it makes impossible to calculate resource quantity if using a conversion factor.  In the model if we change any parameter the activities duration will be adjusted as well as resource leveling.  Easy, the software does all the calculations at a single click.
