Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Armando,

I get your point. Yes, experience and sound judgement of the planner will also help. For the certain weights, you can check with distributions that are widely applied in business (e.g. normal, beta ...) and for pareto distribution, I will check that out.

Edd,

Appreciate your comments, I’ll take it into consideration and give feed back soon.

With regards to the factor, for the moment I just can’t think of other figure or formula how to derive it. But, nevertheless this is how I got it. When my wife went into series of surgical operations late last year, all the doctor’s checking her up, would always start by asking her, in the scale of 1 to 10 what is the level of pain??? So I just tried to apply that 1 to 10 logic to the unknown Labour Effectiveness Factor that I have. Meaning, it would therefore be depending on the planner to measure based on judgement what is that factor in the scale of 1 to 10 (10 refers to the total of all the factors that you being the planner would choose and decide to apply).

Another thing is that, do you think the Pareto principle would apply to this?

Praju,

Just sent to you the file...Expecting your feedback soon...

Hi Armando,

I have take a quick look on what you are trying to do. These are my observations:

1. First, you have an ideal productivity rate, then based on certain factors you add additional weights to come up with an effective productivity rate which usually higher than the ideal. In reality, I believe that true, there are some factors that can cause an effect regarding labour’s productivity, however it must be pointed out that certain factors is not linear in nature. You just can’t come up with a 1% for this and 2% for that.

2. I admire your list of factors, it is quite extensive. My opinion though, can it be summarize into let’s say 5 types? Social, Political, Economical, Geographical and Physical components. And through each type, you have these baskets of factors. Each five will have its distinct weights that will then add to the ideal productivity.

More power and let’s keep planning forward.

Ed

HI Ed,

Just sent to you the file.

My intention actually is to establish certain ideal conditions and its up for us to quantify the degree of difficulty for each specific situation which affect labour effectiveness.

Please give your feed back once you studied the file.

Thanks Nicolas...

I thought you did not receive the file.

Its ok and I’ll do the update first of the file and keep you posted...

With regards to that "Very Strict Safety Factor...", I just had that experience before of basically the same piece of work but the implementing safety standards were too different. It took a lot pressure inspite of the experience and technical know how to execute the job...

Hi Arman,

Tks for the file which is very thorough and
necessitated a lot of input.

- However, I fail to grasp a few items,
you mention three columns low, medium and high,
yet you fill in only one?
- since you multiply the manhours per factors,
if all factors should be nill
(like resource loading or major equipment)
then the manhours would be also ?!
- For ethical reasons, I would rename your
"Very strict Safety Health and Environmental Regulations"
in
"Potentially dangerous products or environment"
I do not think safety regulation hinders productivity in fine.

keep up the good work.

Hi Arman,

Your question regarding "type of contract" Yes in some ways, especially in the Philippines in small type of construction works. Daily Wage Vs Lump Sum contract may affect labour effectiveness.

The highest factor would be the "Level of Skill" followed by using the right "equipment and tools". I think they go hand in hand.

Another factor is "team work", When I attended a seminar in "grid management" I found out that even if you put together a highly skilled and talented people in a team, if they do not work as a team, productivity will be low. Especially people with strong personalities put together in one team does not work, as there will be clashes of ideas and will. Team building is necessary in this case.

Cheers,
Daniel

Nicolas,

Just sent to you the file...

You may add your items and please send the updated file to me and expecting your comments as well on the format then percentages, etc...

The last two items on your list did caught my attention and in my personal rating, it should have a greater factors among the five items on your lists. I would be glad also if you could demonstrate your judgement(percentage) or the ratings I put on the file by putting yours on the column next to mine...

Thanks,

Arman

Hi all,

This thread is very promising,

I should add:
- distance to prefab shops
- square meter available per worker
- type of storage for equipment to erect
- workers unionized or not
- retribution system of workers (per item or per day)

I Would very much like to see the work in progress

Shaiju,

I am very glad that you are interested to contribute and share your ideas, experience and expertise...

Yes, you are right, these productivities are unique in all projects in terms of type, geography, etc. I have seen a couple of productivity manuals generated outside here in the Philippines then looking at particularly the same basic activities, the productivities are far different. Part of what I am thinking and asking is why is the huge difference??? How am I going to quantify these factors that affects productivities in both local and global terms??? That is where I’m started to think of having a checklist that might give me some answers, probably calculations then derive some figures with the help of planners within the PP community...

How could I send you the file of what I started so that you could start with your comments, ideas?

Hi Armando & Daniel,

What you are trying to figure out is interesting. I can also contribute something into it.

I think your intention is to calculate how the environmental factors are affecting the productivity. As we all know productivity is inversely propotional to time taken. So the less productivity means more time taken to do the job. This more time is actually the "Lost time". So there is a "Lost time" associated with all the factors that you mentioned here. It will be unique in all projects.

So my suggetion is to weight the factors based on the Lost time assocoated with it.

Daniel,

Appreciate your reply...Thanks...

Actually, my intention is to generate a comprehensive list of all factors that affects labour effectivess. I will use these factors in my programming works such as duration derivation, resource loadings, etc.

I will include to your 7 items on my list and probably simplify further. I also have CONSTRUCTION EQPT. & TOOLS, ACCESS TO WORK, CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM, MATERIAL & ENGINEERING COORDINATION. Do you think a TYPE OF CONTRACT also has a factor?

I have a follow up question, in your 7 items, which do you is the highest factor and maybe lowest as well.

I will give you a copy my spreadsheet should you be interested and maybe you could also have comments i.e. format and factors...

Thanks,

Arman

Factors that may affect labour effectiveness:

1.) Supervision

2.) Too much overtime may lead to burnout and work efficiency usually declines after a couple of weeks.
3.) Communication - Clear and well define objectives.

4.) Quality of Labour (level of skill may vary from one country to another)

5.) Weather conditions

6.) General Welfare of workers.

7.) Religion and Culture may be a factor
