Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Hello audience:

I am moving from IT projects to Oil & Gas construction projects. Therefore I would like to know the following:

1) The approach you use to plan and schedule in oil/gas construction projects.

2) Basics/Fundamentals of civil/structural, mechanical/piping, electrical/instrumentation (construction).

Thanks in advance.

Vel, you may want to look at this new book, Project Management for the Oil and Gas Industry. (Check out Chapter 6, on critical path drag!)

Best of luck

initially u have to spend more time to understand the phases(engineering, procurment, erection, precommissioning, commissioning and startup)and disciplines (site preparation, civil, structural steel erection, equipment erection, underground and above ground piping erection, electrical, instrumentation, insulation, painting )

Best approach can be :

1 Understand the scope from contract
2 Study all the drawings and understand detailed scope of the project. donot spend more time intially for this. develope higher level schedule at first and gradually develope it to more detailed level
3 always discuss with discipline coordinators who know job better than planners they will provide you always a very good sequence of work as well as the duration and the crew composition

if you need more assistance contact me i will give some templates and sample projects to u

Interesting moved but totally different animal.

However, the basics of putting together a good progamme from scratch to revision 0 will always be the same.

Cheers,
Daniel
Each project needs to understand and to model project technologies.
The main differences between IT and oil&gas (or construction) project scheduling:
1) IT project models usually don’t include materials and thorough cost budgeting (cost components, cost accounts, etc.).
2) Uncertainties in IT projects are much higher and it is hard to develop project metrics (how to estimate the volumes of work to be done). In construction and oil&gas projects you may use volumes of work, norms (rates), etc.
3) IT project resources usually don’t include equipment, mechanisms, predefined crews, subcontractors - only people.
4) The size of IT project models are considerably less.
5) You will need to generate many reports that usually are not required in IT project management.

I am moving from IT projects to Oil & Gas construction projects. Why would you want to so such a move. (Planner or scheduler I assume a scheduler)

On Subject below a Book can be written. (And a couple have been)

1) The approach you use to plan and schedule in oil/gas construction projects.
Just Some Major Pointers
1) Understand the Scope
2) Understand the Start Up Procedure
3) Understand the Construction Sequence.

2) Basics/Fundamentals of civil/structural, mechanical/piping, electrical/instrumentation (construction).

Which Project Phase.
The Normal Engineering Sequence
Mechanical
Structure
Piping
Electrical
Civil
Instrumentation

The Normal Construction Sequence

Earthworks
Piling
Civils
Steel
Cladding
Equipment
Piping
Electrical
Instrumentation
Control Systems.

All project are different.
