Website Upgrade Incoming - we're working on a new look (and speed!) standby while we deliver the project

Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

I am currently in the role of project controls.   I receive from our contractors a weekly update in the form of a file to upload into P6.   Once I have imported or uploaded the project plan I will ensure the milestones are connected and then produce a complete start to finish integrated plan.  Included is a commissioning schedule.

My question may be simple but is there a way or does the P6 program merge the next week plan replacing only the updated items or does it replace completely deleting the interconnecting links I made to each plan.    All schedulers work on standalone machines and they submit a new file each week.

Any help is appreciated.

this is the easiest way to do this. I would suggest that you keep updating the same project id but BEFORE you update it copy it so you have a historical record for that update period and add the date into the project name.

for example if the project id is named CAR and is statused as of Feb 1 then prior to updating it copy CAR and name it to

CAR1-020119

Now you can add the next months (FEBRUARY) progress to CAR

Next Month copy CAR to CAR2-030119

This way all ofyour layouys wont go to wates and can be used over and over again

This tells you the update # and the date of the update. Its simple but effective

Thanks for the info.   Big help I was thinking that this would work but wondered if there was easier methods.   I will be doing this weekly as the contractors submit their updates.  Again thanks for the help.

you choose what do to during the update while importing

Open the project in P6 then select file import then select xer and then find the file to import

during the import options under the Import Action you can choose to Create New Project, Add Into Existing Project, Replace Existing Project or Update Existing Project

You can select Update Existing Project

Then under Update Project Options select Modify

You will now be at the Modify Import Configuration screen

then you can choose what and how you want to import the information

There are 3 different categories

Data Type: Activity

Data Type: Global

Data Type: Project

In each of these categories under the Action column you can choose to Update Existing, Do Not Import, Insert New or Update Existing.

for Activities you can just select Update Existing and the activities will be updated this this will also update the Activity Relationships and the Activity Resource Assignments

Under the Gllobal category thsi deals with Resources and can choose if you want to import them or update then you have the same actions available here.

Under the Project category you can update or add Activity codes, Activity code values, calendars and wbs

There is a lot of flexibility of how and what you want to import
