To name a few planning duties after you completed the stage of gathering informations, programming schedules, loading resources, and setting up baselines, the next step is on the updating and monitoring of actual work deliveries as per you planned aspects may it be an engineering drawings supply, client’s deliverables, and project supplies such as manpower, material and equipment. It is then more on project management as the project progresses. That also includes risk assessment, time impact analysis on matters of additional works and variations. In your progress monitoring and updating, there would often be re-scheduling of delayed activities that affects the entire program and its completion. Weel, it simply is not limited to updating and monitoring, but the planner has got to disseminate the information to all concerned as to the vital statistics of the project, its recovery recommendation on cases of delayed works, and further enhancement of work for earlier delivery. Contruction methodologies also needs to be reviewed in support to the construction section in its work execution enhancement.

Planning is from project conception until its completion. Try to research for more. There are some white paper in the Planning Engineers Organisation website that you can download as reference.

If you are still at the stage before project initiation, then the most important issue is the Risk Identification and Management. A good source would be the PMBOK, they have a process for Risk Management. If you specify the project type maybe we can assist in identifying few items that you and your team would want to consider.

Developing a Schedule to meet the project duration is a challenge.

The planning department need to develop a Schedule based on the information that they have to show that the Project can be delivered within the Contract duration.

This will include reviewing all the Tender documents; Contract Conditions, Specification, plans, BOQs and any information that you obtain after the site visit.

After studying all the information, you will develop a risk matrix associated with the project, and add the necessary time for uncertainties in your tender schedule. The productivity rates and resources will be based on your previous experience, project location, and your team estimates.

Please remember that this is a team effort and not a functional department output. The planning department must engage all shareholders on the team and use their input to build the Tender Schedule.

Subsequently, your top management will review the plan and take the necessary action to bid or not to bid.
