Dec 08 Project Controls Manager for London Underground covering over £1B capital investment annually.  This involved overseeing the planning/scheduling on all projects, some of note being;

  • Victoria Line Upgrade - £2B replacement of Rolling stock and signalling – now in implementation phase.  Besides large scale integration of systems this also required upgraded track, extensive maintenance and driver training  and all implemented on an existing system with minimal disruption to the public despite this being one of the most heavily used lines on the network.
  • Sub Surface Upgrade -  +4B replacement of rolling stock and signalling, now completing Rolling Stock type acceptance and signal contract bidder evaluation
  • Annual Track replacement  - £200M annual replacement of track, switches etc. in both open and tunnel sections
  • Station modernisation – many stations typically £20M+ across London being thoroughly modernised while still remaining open to passenger traffic
  • Cross Rail interface – Ensuring Crossrail interfaces effectively at all impacted stations on our network, total value unknown at present, in excess of £400M

For all the above and the remaining capital works across London Underground my department reviewed all requests for funding with regard to their schedules.

Ensured good planning practice is followed, competence of staff is assessed, Earned Value is implemented and ensures high quality performance data is available.

Participated in all monthly reviews with project directors to assess and query performance.

Managed the businesses key project milestone progress measurement and change control process for London Underground and TfL (LU’s Client) to ensure full coverage and assured quality of data.

Directed the implementation of the planning software and supports users on a day to day basis (Primavera).

Recruit planners (staff and agency) and direct the development of our staff planners through secondments and personal mentoring when appropriate.  Our current planner headcount is around 70 people.

Raise the profile of LU project delivery through speaking events, University lecturing and active membership of project organisations such as the APM.

Sep 06 Project Planning manager leading project planning, reporting, project IT and Earned Value Systems across Metronet.  This role was essentially as per my Metronet role, when I moved into LU I added all LU’s capital programme to my portfolio.

Sep 04 Appointed Programme Integration Manager responsible for:

  • Making EV work for Metronet,
  • Delivered improvement in project controls particularly schedules. 
  • Negotiate with LU on the reports and supporting technology

  • Concentrated on facilitating Value Management workshops
  • Developed better IT tools in the planning, cost and information

Jan 96 Development Directorate - Secondment as Business Systems Client:  preparing and submitting authority requests for IT LU projects.

Apr 92 Project Management Services - Systems and Planning Manager:  Responsible for Projects standards of Planning, Document management, IT and mentored all LU Project planners.
