CONSTRUCTION MANAGER, Hydro Electric Commission Tasmania, Lower Pieman Dam and King River Scheme

The Lower Pieman Dam is a 1.75 million cubic metre concrete faced rock fill dam on the West Cost of Tasmania. In charge of the construction of the dam as the project drew to completion. Commenced as site engineer in charge of the construction of the spillway. Over a period of two years promoted Senior Site Engineer. Responsible for all construction activities, with four engineers and 400 men on site. Gained experience in the following construction activities; roads, bridges, reinforced concrete, slipforming, grouting and bulk earthworks. On the project management side gained experience in project planning using critical path and other methods, cost control, contract administration, control of day labour and sub contract plant. Also took an interest in micro based project management and cost control systems, which were used to supplement the mainframe head office system, to ensure that all critical work was completed at the same time. In August 1986 transferred to the King River Power Development. Became involved in some of the early planning of the construction of the Dam. This included the selection of fill materials, haul road design, haul fleet selection and cofferdam construction techniques.
