GPPCD Collaborative BIM Group Meeting - May 26th 2011

The collaborative BIM Group meeting no. 2 was held at the Victoria public house in Hyde Park, London on the 26th May.

The BIM topic was 4d Modelling & Planning - the 3 stages to implementation by a global 4d BIM Modeling practice.

The attendees came from a variety of backgrounds including software sponsor Asta Developments, major UK based building and civil engineering companies and the London Revit Users Group.

Discussed in detail at the session was how to implement effective 4d Modelling on BIM projects. Points of focus and discussion was 4d logistical strategy, risk management in 4d planning, differences between 4d planning v 4d visualisation and the overall benefits of 4d planning.

During the session we also discussed the current status of BIM implementation within the UK, and the significance of the UK governments implementation strategy on ALL government projects within the UK over the next 5 years. This was announced last Friday by Paul Morrell in "Building" Magazine.

The aspect of professional collaboration was discussed at length with all attendees, with the LRUG representative highlighting the need for greater collaboration on projects at the earliest possible stages of a BIM project-and the removal of traditional "silos" where designers and CM professionals and companies work separately causing inefficiencies and loss of revenue, increased risk, trust and contract commitments on a project.

To allow for greater collaborative understanding , Mr Carl Collins of the LRUG was invited to give a presentation on the designers and engineers aspect and understanding of BIM at the next Collaborative BIM Group meeting to be held at the same location at 4-6pm.

We also discussed about the UK governments adoption and procurement of BIM on all UK government projects within the next 5 years. An announcement on BIM in the UK will be made in June.

To step up to the challenge being laid down by the government, this group will be setting up an accreditation scheme in BIM for the benefit of practicing BIM professionals, consultants and company employees wishing to becoming involved and conversant within this revolutionary arena.

Also, we are putting the finishing touches to the group web page - and this will be launched at meeting no. 3 on the 4th August. The group web page has a forum for BIM, BIM group events page plus other premier Facilities for the Group and it's members.

As the group develops and evolves, I will be setting up more events in the BIM arena and will aim to cover the broad spectrum of BIM and it's influences. Topped with an accreditation scheme and collaboration with other BIM groups we aim to make this section of the Guild a multi disciplined and World leading working group in BIM. To drive the accreditation scheme forward we are talking to a number of trade sponsors. If you feel that your company would like to support this then please contact me.

On that note,I look forward to seeing each and everyone of you again at the next event on the 4th August.  To attend, please check the EVENTS link above and signup.

If you would like to become more involved within this Group then please feel free to contact me;  Matthew Edwards
