Gentlemen I have lots of questions which I would like to discuss here.

I m Ahmed working with a Construction group in gulf. Recently, our company migrated to Primavera 6.0 and we intend to implement it on our all sites which happen to be 30. Some of them as big as having 100,000 activities in the schd. We did started our work but we are facing some serious problem regarding connectivity and speed of the software as the server is placed in the Head-office and all planners are working at sites on the network.

I am researching these days minimum requirements for Primavera

1. System requirements at user end, I have some idea but still I would like if someone could give me some advice as it will clear my doubts.

2. Specially what internet connection or bandwidth we should target? Should we use a dedicated line or shared line and why?

3. How can we make efficient connection between server and client (users)?

4. Which software we should use to make the connection citrix / VPN / microsoft terninal server / compression server or anyother software/technique which will give efficient results? Please explain!

5. I have been also stuck in this question that if primavera supports Resume or discards it?

6. Primavera web is usually very slow and with limited options how can we use it effectively if nothing works?

7. I know its a strange question but anyways.....Since we are migrating to P6 the attitude of all the planners at site is a bit shaky....u know may be they are afraid of this situation how can I tackle it?

I agree in total....infact client server is the only solution but my question is what is the most effective way of making the connection between the server and client??????

With you guys help, I am looking for a permanant solution as I mentioned before I am not dealing with one project we have 30 projects online and some of them as bing as 4Billion USD.

Please if anyone can make any recommendations based on any standards defined!!!!

On my experience Client server is the better option. We used it around the world with different protocol and connections. Some remote areas used satellite or microwave which ever is available but haven’t encounters any major issues or slow connection. For those client with company policies and securities we used citrix metaframe presentation server and while traveling we used aircard or wireless modem if wireless is available via VPN which is a little bit slow compare to client server and citrix.

Some client have their own primavera license but still need reflection to update company database for those using Project portfolio management. Some projects also use timesheet via web and update their own task but very few using web client due to less functionality and more on reporting purposes only.

So you are suggesting that byfar citrix is the best solution. Actually you are not the only one saying it even my IT team has suggested the same. But still from some sites we got the complaints that speed is very slow. What do you suggest for the use of compression server as it compresses the traffic but can only be used with oracle not SQL? Also we have Microsoft Terminal Server!!!!

What is your recomendations about the use of separate dedicated line only for planner.....we might face difficult for its approval as its expensive but yes I would like you to comment on it.

Further we are giving limited access to the planners but what abt the pshycy..and attitude what we can we do to change that....as far as the training is concerned those were arranged and done now.

Ahmed,

1.Standard HP business desktop/laptop or equivalant will do. More RAM helps.

2.The type of connection you have is better depends on how you plan to connect to the server from satellite offices. VPM is slower than a thin-client such as Citrix so more bandwith would help.

3 In my previous company we introduced Citrix for use with P6 and also used VPN in some situations. Citrix is a more expensive but faster as is only sends screen-shots and keystokes between the server and client, whereas VPN sends programme data.

4. Citrix is a thin client which gives good flexibility on how you access the server. You can access P6 from within the company network or from any PC without the P6 installed that has an internet connection.

5. If your just implementing P6 you should have the support as part of the fees youve paid. I would keep it whilst setting up your system and learning about system admin.

6. I dont use web so cant comment. I think most people find that putting all the available components of P6 into doesnt always add value to the business.

7. You need a strict admin policy with limited functionality and access for planners if they have limited knowledge on the software. Dont allow planners the ability to change global settings or to affect the plans of others.
