Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Hi folks,

Having the understanding that Primavera ver. 3.1 has not been upgraded since 1999, and may also not be supported by Microsoft XP after around 2007, I wish to convert to Planner/Scheduler of the P3e suite.

Folks, what urge has Planner/Scheduler over P3 ver. 3.1? and is it advisable doing the conversion now?

Your expert advice on the pros and cons would be very much appreciated.

Regards,

John

P3 will never run on 64-bit software. What the post is saying is that previously Microsoft had apparently pronounced that the new Vista operating system would not support 16-bit applications under any circumstances. Now the client end of Vista will be a 32 bit OS which is believed to support 16-bit applications. The server Vista will be 64-bit which will not support 16-bit applications. It’s understood that this means that desktop P3 systems may still run in Vista. Networked versions won’t.

There are several other considerations though. Primavera 5 is available to all P3 users under maintenance, and there are surely few reasons now for not migrating. Microsoft Vista is not available yet and for this to affect a P3 user the P3 host PC or server will have to have been upgraded from the current OS.

Hi Ronald,

Your comment about "P3 3.1 not running in 64 bit was unfounded" is quite a revelation. In the past, this has been one of the issues raised by those who are convinced that P3 3.1 users should migrate to P3ec because in the near "future" P3 3.1 won’t be able to run on the next version of Microsoft OS. For me this issue is very important because some people, wittingly or unwittingly, have already made a false assumption on the issue.

The first interesting thing that should be pointed-out is that our fears of P3 not being able to run on the new Vista “64-bit” software was unfounded. Had Microsoft actually delivered on their promise to make Vista 64-bit only (with a 32-bit instruction set emulator and nothing for 16-bit programs,) then we would have been out of luck. Fortunately, Microsoft has never delivered on its promises the first time in its long history.

The Vista operating system will be released in two flavors; one for Servers that is truly 64-bit and will not run P3, the other Vista for personal computers will not be 64-bit and will run P3 just fine.

As for your other question: refer to http://www.planningplanet.com/forum/forum_post.asp?fid=1&Cat=8&Top=20673 for more. Good luck!
