Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Alphons,

You are correct. There are many ways to solve this problem. This is an aspect of P3 I like very much...differnent ways to solve the same problem.

thanks for your help,
Phil

Hello Phil,

You can see that if you are creative there are several solutions to the problem, all three of them work fine without loss of relations.

Not if you do all the work within P3, as the process copies/pastes the relationships at the same time.

Where you can get mixed up is with Activity Codes, which is why I recommend removing any organisation before copy/paste.

Also, remember that the Activity ID acts as the index for any target plan and that by changing the id, you will lose any index to the target.

Aside from that as you say, works just fine.

Steven,

Your method is the easiest (for me) of the ones suggested in this thread. It worked just fine.

On my schedule of about 150 activities, I did not lose any relationships between activities.

Some of the other posts indicated relationslips could be lost by re-numberilng. Have you had that experience?

Again, thanks for the help.

Why not Edit, Select All, Copy, Paste , Auto Increment.

Then delete all of the original activities.

Remember to remove any organisation bands from the layout.

If you wished to, you could keep a copy of your original ID in a Custom Activity Field, using Glaobal Change

"Custom Field" = Actid.

Except global change, I don’t think there ia a quick way to solve it.

May be using fragnet also we can do the same :
1st step : Store the activities as fragnet.
2nd step : Delete the activities.
3td step : Now Retrive the fragnet with autonumbering or with prefix or suffix id. Even numbering individual activities is also possible.

Note : Please take a back-up always.

Hello Philip,

First of all why would you like to renumber. If you thought over the setup of your planning it wouldn’t be necessary.

There are several possibility’s but be carefull, the activity ID is unique and is related to all the information in a task.

Best you do is
- make a copy of your project and then
- make a character custom data Item with 10 positions, call it ACTN (Activity ID New)
- make an export to a *.WK1 file from your ACT ID and ACTN
- Renumber now in excel or lotus under the coloumb ACTN the new ACT ID
- Import this file and the new ACT ID’s are in the custom data Item.
- Now make a global change to replace your ACT ID with ACTN.
