Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Perhaps what I’m hoping for is not possible in MS Project, but I thought I’d check with you guys and gather your thoughts here. Thanks in anticipation.

Supposing I have a High Priority task which I’ve estimated to take 3 days and a Medium Priority task which I’ve estimated to take 1 day.

If I was to use the Resource Levelling feature - I would get High Priority Task scheduled for the 1st 3 days (e.g. Jan 1 to Jan 3) an Medium Priority Task to start after that (Jan 4).

So far so good. But if I was to finish the High Priority Task after 1 day (Jan 1), and I marked it as 100% complete, and I did another Resource Leveling, I would have expected the Medium Priority Task to now be scheduled to Jan 2 - as the High Priority Task is now complete - but it’s still scheduled to Jan 4. Do I have to go and manually change the task allocation for my completed High priority task?

What do I have to do so that I can work out what tasks I should be working on for a given day. Any suggestions, pointers, appreciated.

Microsoft Project does not have a strong leveling engine.

The only method I know to stop this type of messing around where MSP levels completed work and ignores Actual Dates, which is not too clever and very frustrating, is to display the Resource Usage Sheet in the bottom pane and enter the actual hours against the completed work. This also changes the Resource Contour to “Contoured”. It may then level as you hope.
