A Project Control Engineer with experience of Planning, Cost Control, Change Management and Risk assessment.

I have began my Planning career with British Coal where I worked as a Colliery Planning Engineer, preparing production schedules, project schedules for replacement faces etc. I was also responsible for the design of Junction plans for underground works, forecasting material usage underground and in the later years preparing contract specifications and monitoring contractor performance as more private companies were engaged by British Coal.

From British Coal I moved to Eutech, the Engineering division of ICI. I was able to develop a role of Planning and Cost Engineer, gaining experience of numerous minor capital projects largely with ICI or recently  divested Petro-Chemical companies. I was responsible for the preparation and updating of project schedules in microsoft project, and the preparation of cost reports, S Curves etc. Eutech was sold to ABB and I remained in the same role but diversified into a number of different industries and clients. I was involved in a major extension project for DuPont at their Kevlar plant in Northern Ireland, which was a large capital project (+$100million) and involved coordination between Design organisations in USA, UK and Europe.

My next position was Regional Project Control Lead for British Energy. Here I lead a small group of Project Control Engineers who were individually responsible for their own projects. The region covered Heysham A & B Nuclear power stations as well as Hartlepool. The team provided project control services in the management of a portfolio of Projects at all three stations and utilised Primavera Enterprise. I was part of the BE core staff team, with the Project staff being supplied through Amec, the prime contractor. This role was a management position, with an overview and best practice guidance element.

Since May 2008 I have been at ConocoPhillips working on their Control System Replacement Project as the sole Project Control Engineer. I am responsible for all planning, cost and change management issues. I also lead the risk review process and have an involvement in general project management tasks. As part of the role I have to manage the procurement and contract award process, issuing invitation to bid packages and documenting the bid analysis reviews. Planning software utilised is generally Microsoft Project but P6 is also used for various sub project plans. Together with the Project Manager team I have to review design and construction contractor performance against baseline and manage variation claims etc.
