BTC Project Description: The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan(BTC), pipeline will transport up to one million barrels of oil per day of crude oil primarily from the Azeri Chirag deep-water Gunashli (ACG) field. The 1,760 km pipeline, which starts at the Sangachal Terminal near Baku in Azerbaijan, passes through Georgia and ends at a new marine terminal at Ceyhan on the Mediterranean coast in Turkey, is due to become operational in early 2005.

BTC Project: The 1,760 km long BTC pipeline originates at Sangachal where crude from the ACG fields is received. From here, the pipeline is routed west, closely following the existing WREP. At the Georgian border with Azerbaijan, the route traverses west and south until it meets the Turkish border. In Turkey, the route runs south to Erzurum, then west to Erzincan and Sivas before turning south to the Ceyhan terminal. The proposed projects will part-finance the construction of the US$3.6 billion BTC Pipeline (the Project). The pipeline will be the primary export route for oil produced in the Caspian region delivering hydro-carbons to the Mediterranean while avoiding the environmentally sensitive Turkish Straits. Tanker tariff in the Bosporus is nearing its maximum capacity and because of the highly sensitive nature of the waterways, the Turkish government is reluctant to increase the environmentally-hazardous oil tanker traffic. The Project is the most important infrastructure project in the south Caucasus region, with significant financial, environmental, political and social benefits for Azerbaijan and Georgia.  The BTC Project is fundamental to unlocking the potential benefits of existing hydro-carbon resources in the Caspian. Subject to appropriate management of the associated revenues, the project has the potential to boost economic growth and assist in reducing poverty, particularly in Azerbaijan, one of the region's poorest countries.
