Planner / Project Controller, Jacobs Engineering, B30 Waste Retrievals

START Date:
May, 2013

I currently work for Jacobs Engineering where I completed my apprenticeship in Project Controls in September of last year.  During the first year of my apprenticeship I was situated at NETA Training.  During this year I studied project control principles.  Alongside learning these principles I ran a simulated project as part of a team, which took me through the whole project life cycle.  After this I was situated in the Stockton office of Jacobs (formally Aker Solutions).  During this period I rotated around four project control departments. I have experience in Cost Control, Estimating, Planning and Procurement.  The majority of my experience comes in the form of planning.

I am currently working in Cumbria on the Sellafield Nuclear Retrievals project. I am situated in the planning department and have a number of responsibilities. I look after a number of work packs on the project for which I must develop the programmes, update on a monthly basis and produce look-a-heads for the forthcoming month.  The work packs cover the design, safety, installation, commissioning and handover to operations phases. I have been on the project for a total of 8 months.

Previously I worked on the URENCO Nuclear Tails Management Facility (Cheshire) for a year. I started on the new build project pre-baseline and helped to develop the full EPC Schedule within a 6 man planning team. I resourced loaded the schedule and then liaised with EIC Leads during numerous meetings to help develop their area of the plan on Primavera P6. Producing man hours histograms enabled me to provide required resource levels for each discipline and also to resource level the program to an appropriate stage.  Post baseline I produced 6 week Look-a-heads for each discipline and updated the progress on the Project on a monthly basis.

In the estimating department I participated in a simulated exercise before working on URENCO TMF project.  I completed a +/- 10% estimate on the EIC equipment of the project.  I have experience in piping take offs and estimates also.

During a four month period in the Procurement department I assisted a senior buyer in a range of activities.  I placed orders for TSIF project via the Oracle system, kept in regular contact with suppliers, sent potential suppliers invites to tender, received bids and recorded this and also met potential suppliers to discuss their range of products and the suitability for our project.

In my final departmental rotation in cost control I carried out a number of activities.  I downloaded timecard databases and recorded the data into spreadsheets enabling the company to measure progress on the project against budgets using Earned Value calculations.
