Alan Mossman BArch MBSc

A passionate adviser on lean transformation and Last Planner in design and construction, Alan trained as an architect and then in management and organisation development.  After working in local government and higher education in a variety of roles, he has worked as a socio-technical systems consultant since 1988.  He only returned to construction in 2001 building on his knowledge and understanding of collaboration, systems thinking, variation, quality and lean.

Based in UK, he has coached design and construction teams implementing Lean and Last Planner for clients in the UK, Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Turkey, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia and is currently coaching organisations engaged on lean transformations with owners/clients in Denmark and The Netherlands. 

Alan is an industrial mentor for a number of doctoral students researching in the area of lean construction.  He has taught the lean construction module on a Loughborough University MSc and is on the Advisory Board for, and teaches on, the emerging MSc in Lean Construction at Nottingham Trent University. 

His description of the Last Planner System (http://bit.ly/LPS-5cc) has been downloaded over 3,500 times and is now available in Russian and Spanish.  It is being translated into German and Danish.

Alan is regular speaker and facilitator at Lean Construction conferences and seminars in the US and Europe.  He helped create the Lean Construction Journal and was co-editor from 2003-2012 and is now Editor-at-large, he hosts a number of lean construction groups on Linkedin (e.g. http://linkd.in/LCNetwork), is a member of the Lean Construction Institute, the International Group for Lean Constructionand the European Group for Lean Construction.  He was a founding Director of the Lean Construction Institute UK, stepping down in March 2010.

He is a member of the LCI (US) Education Committee developing Lean, Last Planner, Integrated Project Delivery, Target Value Design and Big Room training packages for use by LCI Communities of Practice and others.

He was recently invited to join the Lean Coaches Dojo, a group of US based corporate lean construction leaders. Alan is the first person from outside the US to be invited to join this select group.

Alan is interested in ‘who makes money out of (process) waste in construction?’ and the issues surrounding lean transformation at the level of the project and the organisation in construction.  With Natalie J Sayer, lead author of Lean for Dummies, he is researching the issues associated with leading lean transformations in construction and design organisations. They presented the first report on this study to the 2013 LCI Congress.

Alan is a co-developer of the Villego Last Planner simulation, the only simulation that allows participants to experience all five key LPS conversations.  His note on Last Planner has been downloaded over 2000 times and is now available in Spanish and Russian.  He is currently working on a new simulation for Target Value Design, Villego TVD.

Managing Director of The Change Business Ltd, a lean design and lean construction consultancy registered in the UK, Alan is a keen gardener, loves to dance and enjoys walking in the hills and valleys aroundhis home in the Cotswolds.
