that may be true in SA, it is not here. We have been offered both P5 and P6 by Primavera NED.

I will ask them about their tested configurations document though, thank you.

P5 is not available for purchase, P6 is. Your Primavera representative can provide you with a comprehensive Primavera System Architecture and Sizing Guide for P6 (v1.4, dated 31 January), and the latest "tested configurations" document (also 31 January).

I am aware that P6 is the revision of P5, I am not in procurement but I suppose that it may be operating environment issues that are pushing our guys towards P5. If you say it can run on ME then that’s probably it for us. We are still on W2000 here and, while they could probably just upgrade certain W/stations to support P6, it’s unlikely that they will want to. Neither will they want to update the OSs for all W/stations (in the hundreds) just for a couple of planners.

Frankly, the only reason we’re looking at migrating away from 3.1 at all is Pv keep saying they’ll stop support for it, although the actual deadline keeps shifting and I’ve heard Pv quoted saying they won’t discontinue support while they have a critical mass of customers willing to pay for that support, which at least makes sound business sense to me.

and btw, I always ask for a price on last year’s model when looking for a new car / bike / whatever ... good place to find bargains!

thanks for your advice guys, next time someone asks me about OSs and Pv I’ll have a little more of an idea what to say!

Anoon,

PM5 works well on my Dell laptop Celeron 1.6 Ghz 512 Mb RAM with MS Windows XP Pro no SP,

does not work on my Compaq desktop AMD Sempron 3000+ 2.00 Ghz, 512 Mb with Windows XP Home SP2; could it be the Sempron that makes PM to freeze after 15 mn?

Not really wanting to confuse you even further, but I wonder why your company is “implementing P5?” P5 is not a current product. Buying P5 is like going to the New Car Dealership and buying last year’s model. “P5” is actually Primavera Enterprise, Version 5 while “P6” is Primavera Enterprise Version 6. P6 replaced P5 around 6 months ago.

Why are you buying old software? Who is selling you software that should soon be no longer supported by Primavera? (By this last statement, I mean that Primavera has posted their company policy of dropping support for software a year after it is discontinued, which was 6 months ago.)

To answer your question, P5 was a ‘honey’ that ran on just about everything. I ran it on my laptop with 125 Mb of RAM using the ME operating system. P6 is a ‘hog’ that requires the best your computer can put out. Primavera quotes 1.5 GB of RAM and a really fast CPM. The operating system limitations are caused by Microsoft not supporting their own SQL database server software unless you use the professional OS editions. Good luck!
