Senior Planning Engineer I am the senior planner on a £114 million upgrade to improve the River Ribble estuary and the coastal environment flood defence project on behalf of United Utilities. This involves building a 3.5 km long storm water storage tunnel in the Preston and Penwortham areas. This will bring significant environmental improvements to the Fylde coast bathing waters and designated shellfish beds located within the Ribble Estuary. The new storage tunnel will retain storm water that previously overflowed into the river, before it is pumped to a new Preston wastewater treatment works. In order to construct the storm water tunnel a number of shafts must be built which allow access for the tunnelling machines and spoil to be removed. The shafts are up to 10.5m in diameter at an average depth of 26m. The tunnel and shafts will provide approximately 40,500 cubic metres of storage.
May 2011 – December 2011 Interserve Industrial Support Services - Thermal Power Station Senior Planning Engineer I am the senior planning engineer on a Solid Recovered Fuel Thermal Power Station under construction at Runcorn, Cheshire. The £233m Energy from Waste CHP plant is part of a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) waste management project by the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority. On completion in 2012, the Thermal Power Station will be one of the largest Energy from Waste facilities in the UK and will have a capability to treat up to 810,000 tonnes per year of solid recovered fuel derived from household waste which will be delivered by both road and rail. It will be able to supply at full capacity some 174,000 MWth and export 100MW of electricity and 500,000 tonnes of steam per year into the internal network of the neighbouring Ineos Runcorn site.
March 2009 – May 2011 Murphy Pipelines Limited – West East Link Main for United Utilities Planning Engineer / Project Controls I am responsible for the planning on a £80 million pipeline that will carry water across the North West from Prescot Reservoir in Merseyside to Woodgate Hill Reservoir in Bury. The 55km water pipe, capable of carrying up to 100 million litres of water a day, is one of the largest engineering projects ever undertaken by a UK water company. Duties included getting a contract programme accepted by the client, regular monthly updates and continuous tracking and development through the whole life cycle of the project detailing any variation from the baseline, the issue of Early Warning, Compensation Event exercises and the generation of Extension of Time documentation.
January 2009 – March 2009 J Murphy & Sons Construction – Extension of Time Claim – Salford Central Station - Manchester Planning Engineer I was asked to complete an Extension of Time Claim on behalf of J Murphy & Sons against Network Rail. This was concerned with Salford Central Station Re-development and was for the value of £2 million.
September 2007 – October 2008 J Murphy & Sons Construction Planning Engineer I was responsible for the production of tender programmes within the Tendering & Estimating team especially Clause 14 programmes under the NEC contract. I was also the only planner on a 5 year Operational Framework Agreement contract between Network Rail & Murphy construction worth 15 million a year. I also managed a full portfolio of projects from Gas Pipeline Installation, large Civil Projects, Power Station and Brine & Water Extraction allowing for gas storage.
March 2006 – June 2007 Metronet Sub Surface Limited – Capability Enhancement Programme Senior Planning Engineer I was responsible for the planning on 3 major projects that together form part of a major rail infrastructure upgrade required for the Olympics in 2012 totalling £3.5 billion. Neasden Depot Upgrade Project. This was a 70 million rail upgrade project at Neasden depot in West London where the new generation of rolling stock will be located. I was involved in all stages including the Tender preparation, tender evaluations, tender reviews and the final selection process through to assisting the Contractor with Mobilisation onto site. The SER Project (Signal Equipment Rooms). This was a £36 million project whereby 94 Signal Equipment rooms have to be built around the London Underground network and the Service Control Centre Project is a £15 million project where the building of a new 21st century Control Centre is being constructed at Hammersmith to control the new signalling system being provided by Westinghouse. P3 e/c was the planning tool of choice here and all schedules had to be fully cost loaded generating CPI & SPI. Earned Value techniques were intensively used to monitor progress within Metronet.
October 2005 – March 2006 BAE Systems Change / Embodiment Planner F-35 Lightning – Joint Strike Fighter Plane (JSF). I was responsible for the management of changes to the design of the F-35 Lightning plane that is being developed by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company for the US Air force. This is to replace the F-16 fighter plane by 2014. My duties involved notifying the supply chain of how the change would affect them and the making of the parts and also to establish when the first available opportunity would be to implement the change on the first available fighter plane prototype during manufacture. The planning tool used in BAE systems was Microsoft Project.
June 2005 – September 2005 Wrekin Construction Planning Engineer Pollution Prevention at Light Maintenance Depots. This was concerned with the installation and transfer of fuel pumps and tanks at 18 light maintenance depots in the North West to comply with the Pollution Prevention Act legislation. I assisted for a short period during the final works through commissioning and final handover to the client Network Rail. This involved being present on site during the commissioning phase. Tools used Primavera P3 and Microsoft Project 2003.
February 2004 - March 2005 Network Rail Senior Planning Engineer Fixed Telecom Network Project. I was planner on the FTN project whereby total radio coverage was required throughout the UK by NR in the form of radio masts to eliminate any black spots. This involved detailed planning for the pilot site in Straithclyde as well as the two control centres and the South East region. This mainly involved co-coordinating the resources on site laying the fibre optics as well as the upgrades to signal boxes, cable systems to accompany this. Due to the scarce design resource it was necessary to co-ordinate the designs in a fashion that would support the on-site activities. This project is ongoing until 2010. Duties involved client meetings, stakeholder meetings, progress meetings as well as a variety of Earned value exercises with the sub-contract resource, shift setting, producing management reports and s-curves. Tools used were Primavera P3, Microsoft Project 2000, Catia, Visio and the Microsoft office suite.
April 2003 - February 2004 Birse Metro Senior Planner Lighting main upgrade Bakerloo & Central Lines. The lighting main upgrade project was concerned with sections on the Bakerloo, Hammersmith and parts of the Central line. Old redundant cables had to be removed and new ones in their place as part of the PPP contract. This involved planning many shift sessions as the entire route had to be surveyed and all works carried out during engineering hours. This was a heavily design driven project as the margins within the tunnels were very small and each hanger position had to be surveyed. Duties involved client, stakeholder and on-site meetings with the manufacturers making a variety of hangers. The Tracking of Designs per section and liaison with other Infracos detailing our work and making any provision for future work. Tools used Microsoft office suite, Primavera P3, Microsoft Project.
September 2002 - March 2003 Metronet Rail BCV (Bakerloo, Central & Victoria lines) Senior Planner Station Modernization Programme. I was responsible for the planning on the Buckhurst Hill, Notting Hill Gate Modernization and Walthamstow Interchange. This involved the compiling of resourced programmes to execute the works from inception to handover. Liaison with local groups and protection societies was regular on these projects as well as other stakeholders – town planning, transport for London, Royal Parks commissioners, Police etc as a lot of these works involve the closure of major streets and a lot of the work was setting precedents in the capital.
May 2002 – September 2002 PAC Global on behalf of Ford Motor Company Engine Build & Test Planner The Lion V6 Diesel Combustion Engine. Located at the Centre of excellence in Dunton the Lion V6 team was developing the world’s first diesel V6 engine. I was responsible for the build and test phase of the prototype engines as well as liaising with the 3 main customers in respect of timing deliveries and quantities –Jaguar, Land Rover & Peugeot. Outsourcing of the assembly work was also required to supplement the capacity at the Dunton Facility in order to meet the schedule. Immense pressure to perform and deliver daily was evident as the industry had advance warning that this revolutionary new combustion engine would be in series production. Duties involved daily meetings with management and shop floor as well as the transfer of a development facility to supplement output at Dunton and union discussions. Microsoft Project and Excel were the main tools.
January 2002 – April 2002 Infraco B.C.V. Infrastructure Project Planner (Bakerloo, Central & Victoria lines) Station Modernization & Enhancement Programme. This involved the planning for the Station Modernization programme on behalf of London underground whereby 65 stations were required to be modernized in seven years as part of the PPP contract. Primavera and Suretrak were the common tools here.
