Advice on Scheduling for my Masters Degree

Guys.

I wonder if you could give me some advice.

I am doing an MSC in Project Management and have decided to do a research paper on "Deterministic and Probabilistic scheduling"

A couple of things I need are as follows

Are there any best practices with regards to these types of scheduling?
What are the Pro’s and Con’s of each?
Do any industrys have specific standards they adhere to?

I work within the Oil and Gas industry and within our company, we do deterministic scheduling as a rule.

Any advice on this subject is rgreatfully recieved! I am keen to get others views on this.

If anyone can point me to any good references on the web, that would be very helpful.
