"Update Existing" resources etc - what exactly is being updated? How come all my projects bleed together for resources?

 Existing" resources etc - what exactly is being updated?  How come all my projects bleed together for resources?  - If I say "use existing" for calendar or resources - and it changed in update - won't my project not match the original import?
