1. Purpose – Global surveys indicate that as many as 90% of the construction projects globally are delivered without use of a Critical Path Method (CPM) schedule. And yet, other studies show that nearly 85% of projects face time extension requests. Most literature on time extension requests deal with CPM scheduling issues and center on impact to the project’s critical path at the time of a series of events. This paper deals with how to make or respond to delay claims on projects where no CPM schedule was employed.
2. Design / Methodology / Approach – The authors examined all nine non-CPM scheduling techniques and created a step by step method of performing a delay analysis for each situation.
3. Findings & Value – The value of the paper is for contractors and owners who have delay claims on projects with no CPM schedules. The paper provides a methodology for their use when dealing with delay claims.
4. Research Limitations / Implications – Each methodology depends upon accurate project documentation and access to staff who were actually on the project at the time of each delaying event.
5. Practical Use / Implications – The practical use is that the paper provides guidance for how to deal with delay analysis situations when there is no CPM schedules or updates to rely upon.
6. Originality /Value – The authors were unable to locate any publications dealing with delay analysis in the absence of CPM schedules. 7. Conclusions – The paper is a valuable asset for those have to handle delay situations on projects that were executed without any CPM schedules or updates.
