Changing resource allocationas on Assignments screen

Hi, am new to P6 and need to be able to change all fields in P6 Assignments grid. Currently I am limited to change only certain fields but I can not complete resource leveling without this function. This is now very urgent as new project forecasting are overdue.

Can anyone tell me the significance of white and grey cells?
