Layouts or Filters

In organizing data on screen or for a plot, is it best retain all your preferences in a layout, or do you use the layout for formating (columns, footers, etc)only and then filter the data (walls, earthwork, etc)?

I find that frequently I want the same format for several different reports that use a different filter.
