MS Project 2002 (Std) Update Process

Hi all,
I have been tasked with the periodic update of a MS Project 2002 Standard plan that is made up of components from various sites around the world.
I was wondering if anyone had implemented an automated update process for a schedule like this previously and could shed any light on pitfalls / issues etc?
