Finally managed to figure out the problem. the current problem that i am facing with the float is due to the Scheduling option being set to Progress Overide. Once it has been reset to retained logic then the floats are ok.
If everything is ok as per suggestions of other planners and you still have same problem try to add a new activity with same duration and dependencies and see if this give correct float?

thanks for the response..........but the activity is not an open ended activity. it has a successor with a finish to start link and the successor has a negative float.

Check the last activity in the sequence. If the activity is left as an open end, link it to the nearest next relevant activity and re-calculate the schedule.

Any chance you have Progress override turned on? Or maybe you need to run the pfxw utility.

i checked the calender first, thats the same as the project calender and the same for the activity and its predecessors & successors

I think calendar might be a problem.Just check the activity calendar..is it same as the project calendar?
