Industry norm? if progress is through December you call the your Dec. Update, not Jan correct?

Industry norm? if progress is through December you call the your Dec. Update, not Jan correct?  That is the way I have always seen it, and it is best to use Jan 01 as the data date correct? - that way you get all of Dec. - that is better than messing with time - P6 naturally defaults to the AM for the data date correct, why mess with it just use Jan 01 right?
