Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

a) Is there a way of creating a global which puts the activity id against each step?

b) Is there a way of flagging up if and when the start or the finish dates of any steps fall outside its parent activity - or is there a setting which ensures that the steps drive the activity date(i suspect not)

You suspected right I’m afraid.
Steps are not more than a checklist. An activity can’t be finished before all items on this checklist (resp. the steps) are fulfilled.
You can assign weights and user defined fields to steps, e.g. activity_id, but it will be difficult to use them for a filter. In the table "TASKPROC" you’ll find "task_id" as a foreign key - so it’s automatically assigned.
You can’t assign a start- or a finish-date to a step. If you’ll require this information, you’ll have to use activities.
In my opinion a good concept but programming not finalized.
