Hello,

I read all posts and no one said that P5 is an oficial name.

P5 is the simple way most of us are colling the software.

Read this e-mail from Primavera Systems that i - like a client - received few months ago:

Hello Marcio,

The correct name is Primavera 5.0. P5 is like a "nickname". And many users, consultants, partners and clients around the world are calling new version = P5.

Thank you for your interest in Primavera Systems.

Regards,
Primavera Systems
info@primavera.com

So no metter how u call new version, no metter how we will call next version ... just make it simple.

Regards.

They are trying to make more profit ... thats why.

They are exactly the same except 7 things

The Name
The Screen Color
The Column Title "Budget" - "Plan"
The Template Report
The Cost per licenses
The License model (NU) (CC)

Hi Guys,

In the same vein that Primavera seems to want to confuse the heck out of its potential clients: imagine trying to choose a car:

Ford Mondeo - For Country Roads
Ford Mondeo - For Interstate Roads
Ford Mondeo - For Quiet Suburban Streets
Ford Mondeo - For the "School Run"
Ford Mondeo - For When You Can’t Be Bothered To Go To The Supermarket and Are Quite Happy With Your Local Shop.

I was under the imnpression that Primavera was an all-round-tool that you could programme for any industry. What are they trying to do?

Watheq,

Primavera never “went” from P3 Version 3.1 to P3 Version 4.1. P3 version 3.1 is the ‘end of the line’ for the P3 series which began in 1985 as a DOS program and later around 1995 was re-written as a Windows-based program. P3 Version 3.1 was released somewhere around 2003 and remains the standard for construction scheduling in the USA.

Somewhere around the year 2000, Primavera bought a ready-made enterprise program and renamed it Primavera Enterprise. Primavera Enterprise has been given a dozen different names over its history by a like-numbered marketing teams. It progressed from Version 1 to 2 to 3 and then to Version 3.5 (the first stable, useable version) around 2003. This was also the time that the Marketers at Primavera split the product into one for IT and one for Construction. Version 4.1 came out the next year and Version 5.0 last year. Primavera was so busy selling off a third of the company this year that they elected to skip 2006 and Version 6.0 is slated for the normal release time in 2007.

People call it P5 because Primavera is now refusing to actually name it. According to their marketing geniuses, you are just supposed to say “Primavera” and everyone will know exactly just what you mean (even thought there are a dozen different software products.) So, I can understand your confusion – that is just the way Primavera wants it to be. Hope that this helps.

Hi Watheq,

Primavera has used the term P4 in their Project Management Reference Manual(PMRefMan.pdf) along with the term Primavera Project Planner Professional, refer the trademark for further details(refer the 2nd page if you have that pdf file). I don’t know really whether pdf files issued from Primavera website comes under copy rights law. you can download pdf files from primavera website as long as you are using their licensed software i believe.

Cheers!!!

Thanks Marcio for the info …
but again, I didn’t see the acronym “P5” used officially by Primavera Company anywhere. However, I agree that it is becoming an increasingly preferred casual way that planners like to call the new Primavera 5.0 version.

If you go to the following link http://www.primavera.com/customer/index.asp
And scroll down in the “Find Information about Primavera Products”, you’ll find the list of products as follows:

Primavera 5.0 for Public Sector
Primavera 5.0 for Aerospace and defense
Primavera 8.5 for High Tech/Telecom

Expedition 10.1 for Engineering & Construction (Contract Manager Role)
Primavera Project Planner ® (P3 ®) 3.1
Primavera ® Contractor 5.0

Hi Daya,

Thanks for emailing that pdf file which is published by Primavera Company.

As you can see the document name is “Primavera Project Planner Professional: A Guide for Moving From P3”.

Although it contains 4 P’s but Primavera never referred to this version as P4.

Dana, if you are interested in the pdf file that Daya sent, I can forward it to you [as long as Daya wouldn’t mind] ;)

Have a nice day.

Hello Watheq,

When i was in Libya and working for J&P, we purchased the software Primavera Project Planner Professional version 4.1, that time also i searched for the product name in Primavera’s website. i could not find anything. Of course i used their guide moving from P3 for my reference. The softcopy of the filename has been named as P3toP4(pdf file format).

Hi Daya, First I want to clarify that with the release of version 4.1 in 2004, P3e/c for Construction was renamed “Primavera Engineering & Construction”. I liked the way you presented the 4 P’s but if you check the Primavera website and search for products, you won’t find something called “Primavera Project Planner Professional” I didn’t see your referenced documentation (moving from P3 to P4) before. Is it something published by Primavera? If so, I couldn’t locate it in their website or knowledge database. And if it was by some author (external to Primavera) then as you mentioned he/she might be trying to simplify things.

Thanks Ronald,

That was very intersting to know.
And thanks for confirming that "P5" officially doesn’t exist.

Hi Watheq,

I think when they release Primavera Project Planner Professional 4.1, they call it as P4 (reason 4Ps are there) or may be due to version 4 something. If you refer Primavera’s documention, they have mentioned moving from P3 to P4, which means people tend to simplify the things. who is writing Primavera 5 now-a-days but just writing P5. i understand your concern it can confuse people, but in this internet world, everything is shrinking, i mean the boundaries.

Good Question Dana,

I don’t personnaly like it when i hear people say P4 or P5 … etc.

Well, P3 originally means: Primavera Project Planner i.e. it means three P’s.
By coincidence the most famous version of “Primavera Project Planner” is version 3.0 then later 3.1 … so people started to confuse things. In simple words, it is P3, even at the earliest versions 1.0 and 2.0 … it was still called P3.

After that version 4.1 came out which is a customized version for contractors and it’s also known as P3e/c which means “Primavera Project Planner Enterprise for Contractors” or as you named it “Project Planner Professional Enterprise for Contractors” … basically it is a P3 designed for contractors.

Again some people got confused and they called it wrongly P4 … there is nothing called P4.

The latest breakthrough … is “Primavera 5” … be careful it is “Primavera version 5.0” … note the following:

1) Primavera 5 is not “Project Planner” … it’s a management integrated software … that’s why Primavera Company removed “Project Planner” and just called the new version “Primavera”.

2) From now on … there is something called “Primavera” only … “P3” doesn’t exist anymore.

3) “Primavera 6” will be issued in mid 2007.

4) Again … even before they know what is “Primavera 5” some people started to call it P5 !!! and some other people started to say that there will be P6 soon!

Hope this answers your question.
