Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Hello folks,

This in regards to my effort to carry a summary level schedule (about ~ 250 lines), out of 10000 line itmes schedule, to provide the management,  overall high-level view of the project. The big part of the 10000 line items is EPCM schedule, which gets updated monthly. The way I created it, I used summary LOE activities in summary schedule and linked ss and ff with 10000 lne item schedule. However, when I update it on monthly basis and re-schedule, I start getting circular relationship issue and I can not update the ISS file. I was wondering help on 2 things:

What might be the issue that seems to causing the circular relationship &

Is there a better way to manage standalone integrated summary schedule

Many thanks in advance for your help.

It will not work when summary bars are defined by more than one activity code.

As things change the relative position of the activities may change as well as the summary bars and their overlap.  In order to get the correct summary bars defined by multiple activity codes you cannot exclude any activity from any of the summary bar with matching activity code.

David Kelly's suggestion will work, do the following

1) Create a new Activity Code called "Summary" (or whatever you choose)

2) Use the Hierarchical structure of activity codes to build this "Summary" activity code into a quasi-WBS structure

3) Assign all 10,000 activities to their corresponding "Summary" activity code - if they don't belong to any, you will also need to create a filter to exclude these activities

4) Group by the "Summary" Activity code and display Group Summary bars only.

Yes. Use Activity codes instead of LoE activities.
